Anakao is a Vezo fishing village on Madagascar's arid southwest coast, where the spiny forest meets white sand beaches and turquoise waters. The Vezo people are traditional seafarers, and the beach is lined with their distinctive outrigger pirogues. This is remote Madagascar—no roads connect the village, accessible only by boat from Toliara. The reward is unspoiled beach, rich marine life, and immersion in one of Madagascar's most traditional coastal cultures.
Fly to Toliara (TLE), then arrange boat transfer to Anakao (1–2 hours depending on sea conditions). Some lodges arrange speedboat transfers; local pirogues are slower but more atmospheric. The village has no road access. A handful of eco-lodges provide accommodation.
