Hermanus Beach

Western Cape Atlantic/Indian Ocean South Africa

Hermanus has been proclaimed the best land-based whale watching destination in the world by the World Wildlife Fund. From June to December, southern right whales enter Walker Bay to calve and nurse, often coming within metres of the shore. The town employs the world's only "whale crier" who walks the streets with a kelp horn announcing sightings. The cliff-top path offers 12 km of walking with multiple whale viewpoints. Grotto Beach—one of South Africa's largest Blue Flag beaches—provides excellent swimming, while the old harbour area and restaurant scene add sophistication to the whale experience.
