Ibo Island was once the most important trading post in East Africa—for four centuries, Portuguese merchants, Arab traders, and Indian craftsmen converged here to trade ivory, slaves, and silver. Today the island slumbers in tropical decay, its colonial mansions and fortresses slowly being reclaimed by baobab roots and bougainvillea. The silversmiths of Ibo still practice their craft, creating intricate jewellery using techniques passed down for generations. The surrounding Quirimbas National Park offers pristine sandbanks, sea turtle nesting beaches, and some of Mozambique's best diving.
