Mafia Island lies 160 km south of Dar es Salaam, a world away from Zanzibar's tourist crowds. The island and surrounding waters form the Mafia Island Marine Park—Tanzania's first marine park and one of the largest in the Indian Ocean. With over 400 species of fish, pristine coral reefs, and reliable whale shark sightings (October–March), Mafia offers some of East Africa's finest diving. The beaches are quiet, backed by coconut palms and traditional villages.
Fly from Dar es Salaam (DAR) to Mafia Airport (MFA) on small aircraft (30 min). Alternatively, take a boat from Nyamisati on the mainland (several hours, seasonal). Once on the island, boat transfers to lodges arranged. The island has limited infrastructure—most visitors stay at eco-lodges that arrange all activities.

Mafia's reefs are among the healthiest in East Africa. The whale shark aggregation at Kilindoni Bay draws divers worldwide. Sea turtles nest on beaches; dolphins frequent the channels. Chole Bay offers calm water snorkeling. The marine park prohibits anchoring on coral, limiting damage from boats. Most diving is boat-based with professional operators.
Mafia Island is located in Tanzania, Pwani Region. It sits on Indian Ocean and features white coral sand beaches.
The best time to visit Mafia Island is October–March (whale sharks); June–October (best diving visibility). Check local weather conditions before planning your trip.
