Mohéli (Mwali) is the smallest and least developed of the Comoros Islands—a true hidden gem. The Mohéli Marine Park, established in 2001, was the first community-managed marine protected area in the Indian Ocean. Green sea turtles nest on beaches like Itsamia and Nioumachoua between April and October. Humpback whales pass through from July to September. With no paved roads on much of the island and electricity only in some villages, Mohéli offers raw, uncommercialized nature.
