Plettenberg Bay

Western Cape Indian Ocean South Africa

Plettenberg Bay—"Plett" to locals—is the glamorous heart of South Africa's Garden Route. The main beach, Central Beach, curves between the Beacon Isle headland and the Robberg Peninsula, offering sheltered swimming in warm(ish) Indian Ocean water. The Robberg Nature Reserve provides spectacular hiking with whale and dolphin sightings in season. Southern right whales calve in the bay from July to November, often visible from shore. The town combines upmarket holiday homes with excellent restaurants and adventure activities including shark cage diving, bungee jumping at Bloukrans Bridge, and kayaking with seals.
