Sodwana Bay lies within the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, South Africa's first UNESCO World Heritage Site. The coral reefs here are the southernmost in Africa, formed by the warm Agulhas Current sweeping down from Mozambique. The diving is world-class: over 1,200 fish species, healthy hard and soft corals, and—in the deep canyons—occasional coelacanth sightings (the "living fossil" fish). Above water, the beach is a launch point for ski-boats, with 4x4 driving on the sand a local tradition. Leatherback and loggerhead turtles nest on beaches to the north from November to March.
