Kenya's 536 km Indian Ocean coastline runs from the Somali border south to Tanzania. The coast is characterised by coral-reef-protected lagoons, mangrove estuaries, and Swahili trading towns. Mombasa is the main coastal city, while beach tourism centres on Diani (south coast), Watamu, and Malindi (north coast). Marine national parks protect significant reef and turtle habitats.
The best beaches in Kenya include Diani Beach (Africa's leading beach award winner), Watamu Beach (marine reserve and turtle conservation), Lamu Beach (UNESCO World Heritage island), Malindi Beach (historic trading town), and Nyali Beach in Mombasa.
Most tourists can get a visa on arrival or an eVisa (recommended) at evisa.go.ke. The standard tourist visa costs $50 and is valid for 90 days. Citizens of some East African countries enter visa-free.
The best beach season is January to March (hot and dry) and July to October (warm and dry). Avoid the long rains from April to June. The short rains (November–December) are brief and don't significantly impact beach visits.
Fly into Moi International Airport (MBA) in Mombasa for the south coast (Diani, Tiwi) or Malindi Airport (MYD) for the north coast (Watamu, Lamu). Domestic flights connect Nairobi to all coastal airports. The SGR train runs Nairobi to Mombasa in 5 hours.
